AbstractIn this dissertation, black enrollment in predominantly white colleges is examined by identifying forces that have caused its fluctuation and distribution. The strength of these determinants is assessed and an explanatory model of black enrollment change is suggested. A critical procedure is compiling black enrollment statistics: national aggregate figures annually since 1946 and institutional figures for a sample of 486 colleges biennially since 1968. The historical analysis involved the following: (1) a compilation, adjustment, and reliability assessment of data, (2) creation of a uniform and continuous sequence of annual enrollment estimates, and (3) measurement and interpretation of interfaces between these trends and other phenomena, such as black demographic characteristics, financial support of higher education, and civil rights compliance efforts. The institutional/ contextual analysis examined the relationship of four categories of determinant variables to level and change in black enrollment. From the analysis of historical and institutional/contextual relationships it was concluded that three dimensions are at work in determining the level of black enrollment: (1) the enrollment gap and availability pool, (2) external pressure, and (3) institutional resistance and amenability. These dimensions function differently by type of institution and by region and appear to adequately predict levels and change in black enrollment. (Author/AM)
